The glitz and glam of Super Bowl Sunday starts with just one thing
Honestly, I’m not a big football fan. My wife is a bigger football fan than I am. Being a marketing guy, I’m more drawn to the commercials during the Super Bowl. Each year the game features some of the most creative, compelling and entertaining commercials of the year.
As we prepare to watch the big game (along with commercials and halftime entertainment), this day reminds me of a story I once heard about Vince Lombardi. Lombardi coached the Green Bay Packers to victories in the first two Super Bowl games. The winner of the Super Bowl each year receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy, a trophy named in his honor.
When he was a coach, each year he would start training camp by holding a football in his right hand and say, “Gentlemen, this is a football.”
Super Bowl Sunday is an unofficial Holiday in the United States
Today is Super Bowl Sunday. NFL teams compete in 16 games in the regular season. The top 6 teams from the AFC and 6 teams from the NFC then move on to compete in the playoffs The top team from each conference finally compete against each other in the biggest game of the year: the NFL Super Bowl.
You may not find it on a calendar but Super Bowl Sunday is considered an unofficial Holiday in the United States. After Thanksgiving, there is more food eaten on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year.
Super Bowl, Advertising and Entertainment
The Super Bowl is also consistently the most-watched U.S. television event year after year. It costs big bucks to place a television commercial before, during and after the big game.
Advertisers that can afford to place an ad on game day also attempt to put their best marketing work forward. The Super Bowl is known just as much for its entertaining and compelling advertising as it is for the football game.
The Halftime show is also a big event. Although the NFL and entertainers who have agreed to perform during the event have been facing controversy lately, there’s still no denying the reach and publicity received during the event.
The NFL Super Bowl truly is a massive production.
“This is a football”
Football today has become a huge business and production. But it all starts with just one simple thing and Vince Lombardi would remind his team each season.
Vince Lombardi would review the game of football basics at the beginning of training camp. Every year, they reviewed the playbook starting from page one. His team would become the best in the league at the tasks everyone else took for granted.
Sometimes in life, things can get hectic because we tend to over complicate things. When things get too complicated in life for me, I try to simplify why I do what I do. I try to remember the basics, not take things for granted, and be the best me I can be every day.
