Call Center Shift
I knew, for a long time, that large-sized businesses were already making use of a distributed workforce. Most notably, during the late 90’s and 2000s, were call centers in India. If you needed technical support for a product you just purchased in the US, you called their toll free number. During that time, you would most likely get transferred to a technical support specialist in India.
With all the business and personal technology products I owned, I called technical support a lot. But I started to notice something over the years – the accent of the phone representatives. It’s becoming less of an Indian-English accent and more of a Filipino-English accent.
I know this accent
I am a first generation American-born, but both my parents are from the Philippines. I have a lot of Filipino family and friends. I know the Filipino-English accent.
I shared my observation with my parents and they confirmed that the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry is growing in the Philippines. Many businesses from English speaking countries like the United States, UK, and Australia were adding or moving a part of the offshore workforce to the Philippines.
There are many reasons why business has and continue to make the Philippines their destination of choice for offshore workers – I’ll go over these later.
4 Hour Workweek
But there’s another thing that happened over the last couple of decades: technology got better…way better. Faster computers, faster internet, more and better software to communicate and collaborate for work over the internet. Savvy entrepreneurs and small businesses started to get in on the global action.
I first learned about the use of a virtual assistant BY AN ENTREPRENEUR from Tim Ferris in his book, “The 4-Hour Workweek” when it was published in 2007. “4-hour workweek?!?! The new rich?!?!”, I thought. I wanted it!
6,753 miles away
For 6 years, I wanted to find an opportunity to hire virtual assistants so I could grow my business and have a 4-hour workweek. In February 2013, I hired my first virtual assistant 6,753 miles away.
